Apple and Intel

by Shawn on June 6, 2005

A lot of speculation on the net over the weekend leading up to today’s Apple World Wide Developer Conference about Apple making the switch to Intel chips.

CNet published an article late Friday, “Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips” and the Wall Street Journal published a similar story on Saturday, (Paid Registration Required).

Interestingly enough, neither is reporting the story under the veil of rumor, which they have typically done in the past.

I’m really not one to make any speculation on chips sets & processors, so I’ll leave the subject those who know better; John Gruber’s Daring Fireball with I’ll See You Intel and Intel-Apple Odds and Ends or The Tao of Mac with Five Misconceptions Regarding The So-Called Apple-Intel Deal.

Personally, my money is on a possible switch to Intel as a either a pressure play on IBM by moving to Intel for PPC chip production or for a new device based upon Intel’s Pentium D chips which include onboard DRM (for say iTunes-like movie downloads?) .

Keynote is at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time 10:00 am Pacific Time (I was doing the time conversion to Central Time in my head while typing – sorry for any inconvenience). I’m sure much news will follow.
